NAPBS Second Annual Industry Survey: Majority of Employers Use Background Checks

The National Association of Professional Background Screeners recently published the results of their second nationwide survey of human resources professionals and public safety was cited as the top reason for employers to utilize background screening. Other reasons for conducting background checks include:

  • Improving the quality of hires
  • Protecting the organization's reputation
  • Compliance with state or federal laws and regulations

97% of employers utilize some sort of background screening during the hiring process.

 

Majority of Employers Background Screen

According to the survey conducted by HR.com, 96% of respondents affirmed that their organizations perform one or more types of employment background screens as part of their onboarding process, usually after an interview or a job offer.

The top challenges cited by HR professionals in regards to background screening are:

  • Accuracy of results
  • Turnaround times
  • Cost of services

 

Criminal History Checks Are Most Popular

97% of HR professionals who responded to the survey report including some type of criminal records check in their screening program, and only 23% of employers currently use some type of social media screening during the process. The most common screenings employers conduct today include:

  • County or Statewide Criminal Searches
  • National Criminal Database Searches
  • Social Security Trace Reports
  • Sex Offender Registry Searches
  • Drug Testing
  • Motor Vehicle Records
