It is hard to believe summer is almost here which can only mean one thing. The SHRM22 Annual Conference and Expo is right around the corner! This year the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) is hosting its national conference in New Orleans, Louisiana at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center June 12-15, 2022. Like many large trade events, the SHRM Annual Conference and Expo was canceled in 2020 and experienced reduced attendance rates in 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2022, they are rebounding strong with an estimated 15,000+ registered attendees and over 500 companies exhibiting. In honor of SHRM and the great value the organization brings to our human resources community, we thought we would share some fun facts.

  1. When was SHRM founded?
    SHRM was founded in 1948. Originally, named the American Society for Personnel Administration (ASPA), the inaugural SHRM membership was comprised of only 28 members. SHRM has held true to its founding goal of providing professional development and networking opportunities to its members and promoting the interests of the human resources profession.
  1. SHRM is celebrating its 74th Birthday. How has the organization evolved over time?
    Today, SHRM has a membership of over 300,000 HR professionals in over 165 countries and territories, making it the largest HR professional society in the world. Members gain access to training and resources on timely topics including hiring and retention, diversity and inclusion, mental health awareness and healthy work environments, and legal compliance in the ever-changing world of work. With over 200 educational opportunities available at SHRM22, SHRM’s mission to promote life-long learning continues.
  1. Who serves in SHRM’s top leadership role?
    The Society of Human Resource Management is led by Johnny C. Taylor, Jr., SHRM-SCP, SHRM President and CEO. Mr. Taylor is the author of Wall Street Journal best-selling hardcover business book RESET: A Leader’s Guide to Work in an Age of Upheaval. His achievements include an appointment as chairman of the President’s Advisory Board on Historically Black Colleges and Universities and service during the Trump Administration as a member of the White House American Workforce Policy Board. He is a corporate board member of Guild Education, iCIMS, and XPO Logistics (NYSE:XPO) Mr. Taylor is also Vice Chair of the Board of Trustees of University of Miami and Governor of the American Red Cross.

  1. Where was the first SHRM Annual Conference and Expo held?
    The host city for the first SHRM Annual Conference and Expo was Cleveland, Ohio. Only 67 attended the inaugural event.
  1. How many times has the annual SHRM National Conference and Exposition been held in New Orleans?
    The “Big Easy” has played host city to SHRM five times including 2022. The conference was also hosted in New Orleans, Louisiana in 1986, 2004, 2009, and 2017. Other popular host cities include Las Vegas, Nevada; Orlando, Florida; Chicago, Illinois; and Washington D.C.
  1. The annual SHRM National Conference and Exposition is known for garnering best-in-class speaker talent to their main stage. Who are some of the influential people who headlined as key-note speakers?
    Roots author Alex Haley (1991), Former NBC news anchor Tom Brokaw (2009), and Virgin Group Founder Richard Bronson (2019) have all delivered speeches at SHRM Annual Conference and Expo events. This year’s conference will not disappoint with a line-up to include Author, Founder and CEO of Thrive, and Founder of the Huffington Post, Arianna Huffington and a special address from 43rd United States President George W. Bush on crisis leadership.
  1. The annual SHRM Annual Conference and Expo is also recognized for bringing in top talent to entertain its 15,000+ annual attendees. Who are some of the notable entertainers who have performed at the annual event?
    7-time Grammy winner, Gladys Knight (2006); Emmy and Golden Globe award-winning comedian, Jerry Seinfeld (2012); 2002 American Idol Winner and talk show host, Kelly Clarkston (2013); and 3-time Grammy and 11-time Country Music Award (CMA) winner and actor, Tim McGraw (2014) have all performed at the coveted Tuesday night concert. This year’s headliner is 3-time Grammy and 14-time CMA winner, Brad Paisley. Bring your cowboy boots, y’all!
